Atlantic County History

The land that would become Atlantic County, New Jersey was part of the original grant of land to James, the Duke of York from his brother, King Charles II of England in 1664. The duke named this land “Nova Caesarea,” ostensibly after the king. To this day, the boundaries of the State of New Jersey match those of the original territory included in the original land grant deed.

The area known today as Atlantic County was called Egg Harbor Township, and was part of the County of Gloucester. Though its eastern boundary was the Atlantic Ocean, the western frontier of the old county was not fixed until 1761.

Atlantic County ShipyardWhaling defined Egg Harbor in the 18th and early 19th century. Most men during this period were employed in the whaling industry. Shipyards, mills, iron furnaces and brick yards also fueled the area economy. These maritime industries formed the culture and identity of Southern New Jersey, and shaped its future development.

In 1837, the area known as Egg Harbor officially became Atlantic County. The county is bounded on the north by the Mullica River; on the south by the Great Egg Harbor Bay and the Tuckahoe River; on the west by Camden and Gloucester Counties; and on the east by the Atlantic Ocean. The County Seat was established in Mays Landing that same year, and the courthouse built in the town remains in used today.

In the 20th century, Atlantic County’s tourism industry spurred population and economic growth in the area. What had begun as a seaside boardwalk for seasonal tourists became the mecca for gaming and entertainment that is modern-day Atlantic City. Gaming was first approved by New Jersey voters in 1976, and has since become a mainstay of Atlantic County’s economy.
